Marine Castle became the first S.League club to have a marine animal as its mascot. Paya Lebar Punggol followed by adopting a seahorse as its mascot. When the two clubs merged, it was decided that the dolphin should be the new club's mascot.
The Dolphin is a highly intelligent sea mammal; the dolphin is capable of working singularly or as part of a team. It represents dexterity, fleetness and determination. |
Sengkang Punggol Football Club is a professional football club which was formed to play in Singapore's S.League in 2006. The club is a merger of two clubs who played in the S.League in past years – Paya Lebar Punggol Football Club and Sengkang Marine Football Club. The club plays its home games at the Hougang Stadium, where both Paya Lebar Punggol FC and Sengkang Marine FC had previously been based.
Sengkang Punggol finished runners-up in the inaugural Singapore League Cup competition in 2007.
Sengkang Punggol Football Club (previously known as Marine Castle United Football Club and Sengkang Marine FC) was formed in 1981 by residents of Marine Parade with the basic aim of playing 7-a-side tournaments which was then very popular. The name of the club came about when Newcastle United of England visited Singapore in 1981.
The club was registered with the ROS on the 19 October 1981. In 1982, the club drew up a four year youth development programme from which it hoped to produce its players from 1986 onwards.
The programme proved a success as their protege did themselves proud by being selected to represent Singapore in youth tournaments. No surprise then that their young squads went on to achieve some noteworthy results in competitions they participated in, like:
In 1984 - National U-16 unbeaten up to quarter-finals
In 1985 - National U-18 Second Round
In 1986 - Champions Zulkifli Mohd Soccer Tournament
In 1987 - FAS Single knock-out Tournament, unbeaten
In more recent times though, Sengkang Punggol Football Club's achievements had not been too impressive in the years leading to S-League's formation in 1995. It was not among the eight teams selected to pioneer Singapore's first foray into professional football. Since then, its non-selection seemed to have given the club the motivation and impetus it needed to go on to achieve the real success that had eluded it since its inception.
In 1995 when Sengkang Punggol Football Club first applied to join the S-League, it had no track record to support its cause. The picture is different now. The two year absence has got Sengkang Punggol Football Club's tail up and it has gone on to show skeptics that they have what it takes for the big time, in performance terms. The records speak for themselves:
In 1995 - FA Cup Semi-Final
In 1996 - NFL Div.1, Group Champions
In 1997 - NFL Div.1, Runner-up
In 1998 - 11th Position, S.League Of 11 Teams
